Yesterday (September 17, 2015), MOD Pizza held the grand opening of its newest location in the heart of Downtown Spokane. Located in the historic Crescent Building at 707 W. Main Avenue (formerly Madeleine’s Café and Patisserie), this is the second Spokane restaurant for the Seattle-based company (the other MOD is at Regal Plaza at Palouse on the South Hill). Stephen Pohl, a Managing Broker with NAI Black, brokered the lease.

We stopped by for a quick look yesterday, but had to get back to work. We were there just long enough to take some pictures of the new digs and to grab a slice of their famous handspun pizza offered to anxious customers as they waited in line. It was delicious! The first 52 guests in line yesterday received a free pizza (we saw a handful of glowing customers carrying their trophy pizza boxes), a drawing for free pizza for a year, a free retro photo booth, and other awesome giveaways. On top of all that, 100% of pizza sales all day are being donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Inland Northwest to support their mission to help children reach their potential through one-to-one relationships with mentors that have a measurable impact on youth.

MOD Pizza prides themselves in using organic fresh-pressed dough and signature sauces and offering customers the opportunity to create their own pizzas and salads using any combination of 30 featured toppings, or they can also choose from a menu of MOD classics. And get this: the price always remains the same regardless of the number of toppings. Pizzas are hand-cooked in an 800 degree oven in less than 3 minutes and salads are individually hand-tossed for each customer. The menu also includes house-made lemonades and iced teas, handspun milkshakes, and local draft beers and wine.

MOD Pizza was founded in 2008 by Scott and Ally Svenson who were inspired by their love of Italian street-style pizza; their desire for authentic, affordable and fast dining options for their busy family; and the idea that a great company could be built around people. The Svensons bring their experience from building two highly successful concepts in the UK – Seattle Coffee Company (acquired by Starbucks) and Carluccio’s. MOD’s team of advisors and executives bring additional experience from iconic brands such as Starbucks, Apple, Panera Bread, Disney, T-Mobile, Dunkin Donuts, Qdoba, McDonald’s, and Schwartz Brothers Restaurants.

The company has been recognized as one of the “Top 50 Breakout Brands” by Nation’s Reaturant News, named one of the “Fasted Growing Private Companies in America” by Inc. Magazine, ranked as a “Fasted Growing Private Company” (2013 and 2014) by the Puget Sound Business Journal, and named one of “Washington’s Best Work Places” by the Puget Sound Business Journal (2013 and 2014).

By the end of 2015, MOD expects to be operating approximately 100 stores across Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona, Colorado, Texas, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Illinois, Michigan, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.
